As demographics shift, America will see communities and schools transitioning to a majority of minority students and their success is inextricably linked to the well-being of our nation.

As we celebrate the beginning of National Hispanic Heritage Month, the Foundation for Excellence in Education is urging education leaders across the nation to focus on closing the Hispanic achievement gap and continuing to improve the educational outcomes for Hispanic students. This year, America’s schools are projected to reach a demographic milestone: For the first time, the overall number of Latino, African-American, and Asian students in public K-12 schools is expected to surpass the number of white students. By 2023, it is projected that 23 percent of the nation’s students will be Hispanic.
