Frederick M. Hess

Frederick M. Hess is a resident scholar and director of education policy studies at the American Enterprise Institute.  In addition to his Education Week blog “Rick Hess Straight Up”, Hess is best known for his work on a broad range of K-12 and higher education issues, including accountability, charter schooling and school choice, urban reform, collective bargaining, the No Child Left Behind Act, teacher quality, leadership, governance, college affordability, philanthropy and entrepreneurship. He has taught or is on the faculty at the University of Virginia, the University of Pennsylvania, Georgetown University, Harvard University and Rice University.  A former teacher in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Hess holds a M.Ed., M.A. and Ph.D. from Harvard University.
