MaryEllen Elia is Superintendent of Hillsborough County Public Schools. After her first year, Hillsborough earned its first overall A grade, and has since earned three more. Elia began as a social studies teacher in New York. She has served as a reading resource specialist, the district’s first magnet schools supervisor, general director of secondary education, and chief facilities officer. Her honors include the College Board’s Outstanding Leadership award and Florida’s 2007 Superintendent of the Year. Elia holds a bachelor’s degree from Daeman College; a master’s in education from the University of Buffalo; and a Master of professional studies in reading from State University of New York at Buffalo.
