Meet Tom Greene

ExcelinEd’s Western Regional Advocacy Director

As we celebrate our nation’s Independence Day this week, I am inspired by the growing number of families embracing the freedom to choose the best education options for their children. Families across the country are making their voices heard through the great American democratic process that was established and sustained by generations of leaders, citizens and heroes. It is time to let freedom ring and give every parent the opportunity to choose the best education option for their child.

The Research on Private Education Choice highlights the overwhelming research showing that school choice programs give students the opportunity to achieve the American dream.

My Favorite Quote

“Finally, give parents a choice. Right now, if I am of means and I have a kid, I will move to a school district where the schools are good. That will be Palo Alto [California] or Fairfax County [Virginia] or Hoover, Alabama, near where my relatives live, and the public schools will be really good. If I’m really wealthy maybe I’ll send my kids to private school. So who’s stuck in failing neighborhood schools? Poor kids. That’s the height of inequality. Give the parent of that child the same ability, whether it’s a charter school or inter-district mobility or whether it is a voucher, to put that child in a place where he or she is going to succeed.”

What Inspires Me

I am inspired by Florida’s HOPE Scholarship Program and what it means for bullied students across the country. When states like Florida find a potential solution to a societal problem, like bullying and school safety, the idea will spread. Currently, several states in the western region of the country are considering replicating Florida’s model.

State Spotlight: Nevada

The Nevada Department of Education recently released a report on its Opportunity Scholarship Program showing more than 2,000 low-income students benefiting from the tax-credit scholarship program, which gives these students the opportunity to attend private school. Take a closer look at how the program works and who it serves.
