#AskExcelinEd: My Summer Reads and Research

At ExcelinEd, we believe each student deserves the chance to graduate from high school ready for college and career. State accountability systems are essential to ensuring this happens, and this is why I work each day to support states as they develop and implement accountability systems that prioritize learning and achievement for all students.

What I’m Reading

  • “The Conservative Heart: How to Build a Fairer, Happier, and More Prosperous America” – by Arthur C. Brooks. I recently read this book and am striving to use its principles in education to build a fairer, happier and more prosperous America.
  • “Suicide of the West: How the Rebirth of Tribalism, Populism, Nationalism, and Identity Politics is Destroying American Democracy” – by Jonah Goldberg. This is next up on my nonfiction to-read list. From it, I’m hoping for more insight and understanding of the state of American democracy.
  • Fiction is far more fun. I have just finished Randy Wayne White’s Doc Fordseries, I am half way through the Jack Reacher series by Lee Child and I’m anxious for the paperback version of Christopher Moore’s “Noir” to be released.

Research I’m Reading

I am currently reading the recently-released state ESSA plans from—you guessed it!—all 50 states and D.C. (I’ll be listening to Ella Fitzgerald’s rendition of “Summertime” throughout this process.)
