ExcelinEd Statement on U.S. Education Secretary Nomination

Today, Patricia Levesque, CEO of the Foundation for Excellence in Education (ExcelinEd) released the following statement on the nomination of Miguel Cardona for Secretary of the U.S. Department of Education.

“ExcelinEd extends congratulations to Miguel Cardona on the nomination for Secretary of the U.S. Department of Education.

“The year ahead holds challenges and great promise to help students.  Several key policies will be vital to their success, and we encourage the new secretary to consider these on day 1:

“First, student assessment must be a top priority. Every student counts. We must know how our kids are doing and where we need to improve following 2020’s unprecedented disruptions. We can’t fix what we don’t see.

“Second, we’ve proven over the last year that education is not a fixed place. Learning can happen anywhere. Learning opportunities should be limitless, and families must be empowered with options that work best for their child.

“Third, I encourage the new secretary to support state-level efforts, especially in their work to improve early literacy, strengthen college and career pathways, close the digital divide and reimagine learning. These goals have the power to transform education, and we look forward to working with education leaders everywhere to achieve them.”
