F. Philip Handy

1944-2024

Recognized by the State of Florida as a “Titan of Education,” Phil Handy was a founding member of ExcelinEd’s Board of Directors and the former Chairman of the Florida State Board of Education. He leaves an extraordinary legacy of expanding educational opportunity for families, strengthening accountability and leading the charge for sound public policy in early literacy. His decades of leadership and passion for excellence in education transformed the lives of millions of students and will forever inspire us. Read a tribute to Phil’s service.

Susanne Stephens

1958-2023

Susanne Stephens was a member of the ExcelinEd family for eight years, serving with the Administration team as our Accounts Payable Coordinator from 2015-2023. Susanne’s deep faith, optimism and warmth leave a lasting impression for those who were blessed to know her. Her professionalism and dedication to our work made ExcelinEd a stronger and better organization. She will be deeply missed.

Zach Eckert

1991-2021

Zachary S. Eckert passed away on December 18, 2021.  A proud son of Indiana, he was a graduate of Indiana University and received his Juris Doctor degree from the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law. Zach served as ExcelinEd’s Midwest Regional Advocacy Director from 2019-2021. A passionate advocate for students and a relentless warrior for our mission, he will forever be in our hearts.
