After years of struggling to improve Mississippi’s low reading scores, state legislators made history in 2013 by passing the Literacy-Based Promotion Act. For the first time, the Magnolia State had a comprehensive approach to improving literacy outcomes for all students. Moderated by Governor Jeb Bush, Mississippi’s Former Superintendent Dr. Carey Wright and ExcelinEd’s Dr. Kymyona Burk share lessons learned from the front lines of taking Mississippi from the bottom to the top of literacy achievement.
This session provides an overview of the Mississippi Literacy-Based Promotion Act and its direct impact on the first cohort of students who were impacted by the law. Participants will leave the session with clear evidence on the benefits of retention policy, facts vs. myths on retention and actions for adopting and implementing important policy principles within their state.
