#MathMonday: April Showers Bring Math Powers!

Quality

Did you know April is Mathematics and Statistics Awareness Month? Its goal is to increase public understanding of and appreciation for mathematics and statistics.

This recognition began in April 1986 as Mathematics Awareness Week with a proclamation by President Ronald Reagan that included these insightful words:

“Despite the increasing importance of mathematics to the progress of our economy and society, enrollment in mathematics programs has been declining at all levels of the American educational system. Yet the application of mathematics is indispensable in such diverse fields as medicine, computer sciences, space exploration, the skilled trades, business, defense, and government. To help encourage the study and utilization of mathematics, it is appropriate that all Americans be reminded of the importance of this basic branch of science to our daily lives.”

Math is Essential, Now More than Ever!

In today’s 21st-century economy, success in math gives students an enormous suite of college and career options. It increases prospects for future income, and research shows it improves later-in-life outcomes

Math skills start in K-12 education. To ensure all students are prepared to succeed in algebra (a key predictor of postsecondary success), ExcelinEd has developed fundamental principles and a comprehensive K-8 math model policy. Both are based on the findings of the National Mathematics Advisory Panel to guide and support state leaders implementing and/or strengthening math policy in their K-12 systems.

Let’s Celebrate Math!

Policymakers and educators nationwide are invited to join Texas A&M University, the Connecticut Department of Education and others in observing Mathematics and Statistics Awareness Month. Activities can include contests, exhibitions, guest lectures and open houses. Prominent figures in math can be featured through appearances, stories and readings—all to engage students in the value of studying math.

Let’s use April to shower kids with math wisdom, and surely student learning will blossom!
