Tim Flatley serves as the Policy Director, Math for ExcelinEd. Tim most recently worked at the West Virginia Department of Education as the Middle and Secondary Mathematics Coordinator to advance mathematics experiences for students across West Virginia. He facilitated the revision of math and data science standards and led the department’s Unite with Numeracy initiative. Tim strived to engage, equip, and empower educators, create positive mathematics learning experiences for all students, and promote mathematics’ relevance and importance for all stakeholders.
Tim’s passion for education and his leadership journey began as a high school mathematics teacher alongside his wife who is also a high school math teacher. He also served as an assistant football and basketball coach, athletic director, and department chair where he valued being involved in the school community and honed his skills as a leader. Tim has served on boards of directors and committees, including the Association of State Supervisors of Mathematics, the West Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and the Clay Center for the Arts and Sciences’ Education Committee. His enthusiasm and energy for mathematics is contagious, and he encourages all to see the connections between math and the world around us. Tim earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics and a master’s degree in Secondary Education/Mathematics from West Virginia University. He lives in Charleston along with his wife, three children, and two cats.
