Innovation

The New Hampshire Department of Education announced a first-in-the-nation program partnership with Sal Khan, founder of Khan Academy, and Schoolhouse.world to provide free tutoring to all New Hampshire high school students. Schoolhouse.world is an online platform that connects people around the world to free, small-group tutoring sessions led by subject-matter experts. The platform currently offers tutoring in high school math and SAT prep, with the aim of expanding across to more age groups and academic subjects.

“This is the future of education. As students tackle recovery from this past year’s disruptions, they must have new and different quality solutions to accelerate learning.

“New Hampshire is meeting the challenge on their behalf with customized resources that empower students to do more than ‘catch up.’ Schoolhouse.world puts at their fingertips ongoing support to excel in 2021 and beyond.

“I applaud Governor Chris Sununu, Commissioner Frank Edelblut, Sal Khan and the Schoolhouse.world team for making this innovative solution a reality for New Hampshire’s students.”

Governor Jeb Bush, founder and chairman of ExcelinEd

Learning loss due to pandemic-related disruptions could have long-term impacts on the lifetime success of students. Tutoring holds significant promise for students struggling to catch up, but too often the cost is too high for students that need it the most. By offering free access to individualized instruction, students will have access to the support needed to master content.

Schoolhouse.world first opened its virtual doors to tutors and students in early 2020 through a prototype site built in Coda. People from all over the world volunteered to tutor sessions, including teachers, professionals, PhDs and even accomplished high school students. Since then, the Schoolhouse.world team has provided more than 1,100 tutoring sessions for students in more than 40 countries. They are also working to expand the platform’s capability for monitoring sessions and training new tutors.
