Maryland Adopts Math Policy to Strengthen Achievement and Expand Student Opportunities

Maryland

Patricia Levesque, Chief Executive Officer of ExcelinEd, issued the following statement praising the Maryland State Board of Education for improving math proficiency standards:

“The new policy adopted by Maryland’s Board of Education directly tackles the state’s math achievement crisis by equipping students and educators with the tools, training and resources necessary to build strong foundations in mathematics.

“This approach ensures all students receive high-quality instruction, structured interventions and access to advanced coursework—key steps toward closing achievement gaps and giving students the support needed to develop the problem-solving and analytical skills essential for future success. Additionally, professional development for educators and assessments aligned to rigorous new math standards will help drive real improvements in student achievement.

“I applaud Dr. Carey Wright and the Maryland State Board of Education for their commitment to improving math proficiency, and we look forward to continuing to partner with them as they implement this policy.”
