Education Space / Maryland Adopts Math Policy to Strengthen Achievement and Expand Student Opportunities
“The new policy adopted by Maryland’s Board of Education directly tackles the state’s math achievement crisis by equipping students and educators with the tools, training and resources necessary to build strong foundations in mathematics.
“This approach ensures all students receive high-quality instruction, structured interventions and access to advanced coursework—key steps toward closing achievement gaps and giving students the support needed to develop the problem-solving and analytical skills essential for future success. Additionally, professional development for educators and assessments aligned to rigorous new math standards will help drive real improvements in student achievement.
“I applaud Dr. Carey Wright and the Maryland State Board of Education for their commitment to improving math proficiency, and we look forward to continuing to partner with them as they implement this policy.”
About the Policy
The Maryland State Board of Education’s PreK-12 Mathematics Policy strengthens math education by:
- Replacing the traditional Algebra I–Geometry–Algebra II sequence with a rigorous, integrated two-year Algebra course to provide a stronger foundation for advanced math learning.
- Eliminating exclusionary tracking practices to ensure all students have access to challenging coursework and opportunities for acceleration.
- Providing structured interventions and additional instructional time to support struggling students.
- Setting minimum daily instructional time for math to ensure students receive consistent, high-quality instruction.
- Expanding access to advanced math pathways, including courses in Quantitative Reasoning, Data Analytics, Algebraic Foundations of Calculus
, and Statistics and Probability.
- Requiring professional development for educators to align teaching strategies with research-based best practices.
- Ensuring parents receive regular updates on student progress, interventions and opportunities for advanced coursework.
