Fundamentals of Literacy Coaching

Overview

The adoption and deployment of literacy coaches trained in the science of reading is one of ExcelinEd’s 18 fundamental principles of a comprehensive early literacy policy. Literacy coaches serve a critical role in supporting teachers by providing job-embedded professional development and working directly with teachers to improve classroom practice and, ultimately, student reading achievement.

To support states’ and districts’ efforts to equip and deploy literacy coaches, ExcelinEd partnered with The Florida Center for Reading Research (FCRR) to develop the Fundamentals of Literacy Coaching professional learning resource. This free resource is intended to be used by state and district leaders who are responsible for building the capacity for a cadre of literacy coaches. The modules are informed by reading research and adult learning theory and integrate opportunities for collaboration and dialogue among colleagues. The Fundamentals of Literacy Coaching resource includes the necessary components to equip literacy coaches with the essential knowledge and skills to become successful literacy leaders and contribute to the improvement of reading instruction and student achievement.

This resource is divided into two (2) parts. Part I includes modules 1-3: 1) Applying Principles and Practices that Foster a Positive Culture, 2) Applying Effective Pedagogy and Andragogy, and 3) Data to Inform Professional Learning. Part II includes modules 4-6: 4) Planning, Implementing, and Analyzing Literacy Instruction, 5) Growing Professionally, and 6) Planning and Implementing Coaching. The session delivery times range in length from 120 to 175 minutes.
